29th Annual Phonebook Recycling Drive
Angelina Beautiful/Clean (AB/C) and Consolidated Communications are partnering for the 29th annual “Telephone Book Recycling Drive” taking place in August and September when new phone books are distributed to continually encourage residents and businesses to recycle their old phone directories and other recyclable materials.
Consolidated Communications has a focus on sustainability when it comes to putting these phone books together from using recycled materials for the paper to environmentally-friendly, soy-based inks to non-toxic glues for binding. Consideration into each step of the process is taken to minimize impacts to the environment. We partner with Consolidated Communications each year along with The City of Lufkin Recycling Center to encourage East Texans and businesses to recycle so that each individual can take part in the end-of-life recovery opportunities available in East Texas.
Residents of Lufkin may place recycle using their blue curbside recycling container. Non-residents can utilize the 24-hour free drop off at the Lufkin Recycling Center or the traveling Alley Cat Recycling container that stops in Hudson, Central, and Zavalla. The Lufkin Recycling Center is located at 500 Southpark Drive. The site accepts cardboard, newspaper, magazines & junk mail, office paper & shredded paper (please bag shredded paper); aluminum cans (cans only), steel cans (cans only), plastics labeled #1 or #2 (such as water bottles or rinsed out shampoo bottles).
According to Jennifer La Corte, AB/C Executive Director, “Since the campaign began decades ago, we have kept more than 200 tons of recyclable material out of the Angelina County landfill.” Waste diversion also helps to avoid costs associated with landfills and strives to recover the residual value of the diverted materials. For example, a ton of cardboard will not only avoid the landfill tipping fee but can be sold for a financial return.
