Tire and Electronic Recycling Day Keeps Tons out of the Landfill
The City of Lufkin Recycling Center and Angelina Beautiful/Clean (AB/C) partnered for the annual “Tire and Electronic Recycling Day” once again to help provide free to low-cost services to the community. This event is a convenient way for Angelina County residents to properly dispose of unwanted tires and electronics. In an effort to cut down on illegal dumping and minimize health risks to the public and environment, people were able to dispose of household electronics and up to eight regular tires at no charge. Car and small engine batteries were also able to be disposed of at this year’s event.
Per Jennifer La Corte, AB/C Executive Director, “Illegal dumping is a concern not only as unsightly litter but can cause health concerns to the public as well. Old tires provide shelter for rodents, and can trap water, providing a breeding ground for mosquitoes. In landfills, tires consume up to 75 percent air space which can become a problem over time with limited land space. In addition, tires may become buoyant if they trap methane gases which can rupture landfill liners thus polluting surface and ground water.”
Events like this one help the community and neighboring rural areas by offering services that may not be easily available otherwise. La Corte states, “We partner with key community entities to try and take away as many barriers as possible to keep our part of East Texas a great place to live, work and play. When we do events like this to keep unwanted electronics out of the landfill and old tires out of our ditches, we are doing so much more than just cleaning up. Beautiful land and well-kept communities translates beyond what the eye sees. It’s about caring for our society’s public health, economic development and quality of life.”
This year saw over 350 households from over 15 unique zip codes in and around Angelina County. Electronics were collected free of charge and ranged from televisions to microwaves to computers. The event collected over 260 televisions and over 40 small engine/car batteries. Over 18,100 tons of electronics were kept out of the landfill from this event alone. People are able to bring up to 8 regular tires to dispose of free of charge with each additional tire only costing $2.00 for each tire, and semi-truck tires costing $5.00 each. Many other disposal options in the area charge much higher pricing causing individual to take illegal measures that harm our environment. The event this year saved 1,200 from the landfill and were sent to be recycled and reused to make such things as running tracks, playground filler and asphalt mixtures.
